Siegel Jewelers was founded in 1889 by Joseph Siegel...

Siegel Jewelers was founded in 1889 by Joseph Siegel who came to America in 1881 on his own at age 17.   Success soon followed because of the importance of the railroads.  A watch maker who could keep your watch running accurately was a great asset because you would never miss your train, and Joseph was one of the best.   Siegel Jewelers soon added jewelry, diamonds, silver, and eye glasses to their shop and many of Grand Rapids most elite citizens became customers.  A symbol of this success was that in Joseph’s personal life he acquired a summer home on Lake Michigan witch he enjoyed with his wife Ethel and their 3 children.

Joseph's two sons, Norton and Arthur, joined him in business and shortly after WWI where running the business and involving themselves in the Grand Rapids community.   Their smart business practices allowed them to survive the depression where most jewelry stores failed.   An interesting note is that in 1936 Arthur who was an officer in the Amateur Boxing Association, went to New York to petition that the United States boycott the Olympic Games in Nazi Germany.

Miller Siegel joined his father, uncle, and grandfather after WWII, coming to the business with a business degree from the University of Michigan and the new professional title of gemologist. Siegel Jewelers took note of the growing national trend of suburban shopping and opened a second store at the brand new Woodland Mall in 1968 along with many other local merchants.  The decision turned out to be the right one.  Explosive growth and expanded space at Siegel’s center court location propelled the store to dominance in the Grand Rapids market and to become one of the largest independent mall stores in the nation.  Leslie Siegel, Miller’s wife, grew and managed the silver, crystal, china, and gift departments that where a part of the nation’s premier jewelry stores in every community at the time.

By the turn of the century the landscape for jewelry stores and retail stores of all kinds had changed again.  No longer where strong local merchants part of the collection of stores inside malls.  Big Box and strong local stores started to dominate retail from free standing stores not in Downtowns as before but in shopping districts in the suburbs. Read more.
