Custom Ring Design: Demystified
The phrase "custom ring" sounds intimidating. It conjures images of complicated design software, months of back-and-forth, and a price tag that makes your eyes water. The reality, at least at Siegel Jewelers, is much more approachable — and often more affordable than people expect.
Here's exactly what the process looks like.
Step 1: The Conversation
Everything starts with a conversation. You come in (or call, or email) and tell us what you're thinking. This doesn't need to be precise — "I want something vintage-inspired with a sapphire" is plenty to start with. So is "I want something completely different from anything I've seen in stores." So is "I have a stone from my grandmother's ring and I want to reset it."
We ask questions. What's the occasion? What's the budget? What does the person who'll wear it like? Do you have any reference images? What metals and stones are you drawn to?
This conversation usually takes 30–60 minutes, and it's free. No commitment required.
Step 2: The Design
Based on the conversation, our design team creates a sketch or a CAD rendering (computer-aided design) of the proposed ring. For most custom projects, we use CAD because it allows us to show you the ring from multiple angles and make adjustments quickly.
You review the design, give feedback, and we revise. This typically takes 1–3 rounds of revision before you're happy with the design. The goal is that when you see the final rendering, you're genuinely excited — not just "fine with it."
Step 3: The Wax Model
Once the design is approved, we create a wax model using a 3D printer. This is a physical, to-scale model of the ring that you can hold, look at, and try on (sort of — wax isn't as comfortable as metal, but it gives you a real sense of the proportions and size).
This step is crucial because it's your last chance to make changes before we cast in metal. Most clients are thrilled at this stage; occasionally someone wants a small adjustment, and we make it.
Step 4: Casting and Setting
The approved wax model is used to cast the ring in your chosen metal — yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, or platinum. The casting process takes a few days. Then our bench jewelers set the stones, finish the surface (polishing, texturing, or whatever the design calls for), and do a final quality inspection.
Step 5: The Reveal
You come in to pick up your ring. This is our favorite part of the process. Seeing someone's reaction when they hold the finished piece — something that didn't exist before and was made specifically for them — never gets old.
How Long Does It Take?
A typical custom ring takes 4–6 weeks from the initial consultation to completion. Rush projects can sometimes be accommodated, but we prefer not to rush — the craftsmanship shows.
How Much Does It Cost?
Custom rings start around $1,500 and go up from there depending on the complexity of the design, the metal, and the stones. Many customers are surprised to find that a custom ring isn't significantly more expensive than a comparable off-the-shelf piece — and it's entirely yours.
Is It Worth It?
If you want something that no one else has, that's made exactly to your specifications, and that carries the story of how it was created — yes, absolutely. Custom design is one of the most meaningful things we do at Siegel Jewelers.
