Understanding the 4Cs of Diamonds
When purchasing a diamond, the 4Cs — Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat — are the universal language used to describe and evaluate a diamond's quality. Understanding these factors will help you make a confident, informed decision.
Cut: The Most Important C
Cut is widely considered the most important of the 4Cs because it directly influences a diamond's brilliance and fire. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, creating that signature sparkle.
Diamond cut grades range from Excellent to Poor. At Siegel Jewelers, we recommend prioritizing cut above all other factors — a well-cut diamond of slightly lower color or clarity will outshine a poorly-cut "perfect" stone.
What to look for: Aim for Excellent or Very Good cut grades. Avoid Fair or Poor cuts, which result in dull, lifeless stones.
Color: Less Is More
Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow/brown). Colorless diamonds (D–F) are the rarest and most valuable, but the difference between grades is often invisible to the naked eye.
For white gold or platinum settings, aim for G–H range — these appear colorless when set, at a significantly lower price than D–F stones. For yellow gold settings, you can go as low as I–J since the warm metal masks any slight tint.
Clarity: Nature's Fingerprints
Clarity refers to the presence of internal inclusions or external blemishes. The scale runs from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3).
The sweet spot for most buyers is VS1–VS2 (Very Slightly Included) or SI1 (Slightly Included). These grades are "eye-clean" — meaning inclusions are not visible to the naked eye — at a fraction of the cost of flawless stones.
Carat: Size vs. Weight
Carat is a measure of weight, not size. One carat equals 0.2 grams. While larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable, two diamonds of the same carat weight can look very different depending on their cut.
Pro tip: A 0.90-carat diamond can look nearly identical to a 1.00-carat diamond but cost significantly less. Consider "just under" sizes (0.90, 0.95) for better value.
